In early April the Federation of Liverpool Waterfront Residents Associations (FLWRA) met with Whitbread, the owners of the Britannia pub and a member of Mersey Waterfront’s “Pride in our Promenade” to discuss the development of the Prom and the Britannia.
Local residents from FLWRA stated that the Britannia was not of sufficiently high standard for the locality and currently attracted the wrong clientele. A site with such a wonderful position should have a much better restaurant/hotel.
The only form of new build acceptable to locals was a development for a boutique hotel and restaurant which was built on the site of the present car park, leaving an even greater view of the river available for posterity.
Whitbread have plans to upgrade the Britannia, which was built as a 7 year temporary building for the International Garden Festival in 1984. They are looking at the possibility of buidling a Premier Inn with a minimum of 40 bedrooms and a good restaurant.
Whitbread are happy to work in partnership with local residents and another meeting is planned for June, when Whitbread will present their proposals for comment.
